What is YIMS and why is it relevant for our IMSC events?
Since the International Mass Spectrometry Conference is the largest MS conference and tries to foster collaboration across borders, we came together with the young societies from the Netherlands (youngNVMS) and France (Club Jeune de SFSM) and founded Young International Mass Spectrometerists. Initially, we wanted to pool ressources to finance and organize the different events, but since we are working on a societal framework to invite other countries too, fostering an international and diverse executive board in the long run. If you have any questions about YIMS, it will be introduced at our various IMSC events. Otherwise, you can contact the YIMS board already at yims.info@gmail.com or come to the YIMS booth that will have a board member to assist you. In short, all YIMS events are also our DGMS Young Scientist events and we would be happy to host all of you and get your feedback afterwards. A quick description on the individual events:
- YIMS Picnic (23.08, 1 – 2.30 pm): Getting together as young scientists before the official start of the conference to connect early. Its bring your own lunch, people joining the short courses will get lunch packages from them. The picnic will be at the botanical garden, right outside the conference venue.
- Flash Talks (23.08, 3 – 4.15 pm): To give as many young scientist a platform to present their research, we created a flash-talk session after the picnic. Each person has 90 seconds time to present their research. There will also be 2 awards for the best flash talks.
- Young Scientist session (24.08, 10.30 – 12.30 pm): A oral talk session, that the was exclusively for young scientist talks. The talks were selected from the YIMS executive board.
- Networking workshop (24.08, 5.45 – 7.30 pm): A workshop specifically discussing networking in a conference context by a diverse panel of scientists and industry representatives. The audience is invited to participate by asking questions and using Mentimeter to poll over different topics.
- Young Scientist Bar evening (25.08, 8 pm): Spending a relaxed evening among peers and introducing the Barabaar Brotteaux as the home bar for young scientists
- YIMS award ceremony (27.08, 3.30 – 4.30 pm): Short session in the Agora to award the various prizes for poster, oral and flash talks.
YIMS Awards for posters, flash and oral talks
Thanks to our sponsors (Peak Scientific, Thermo Scientific, MS SPIDoc’s & MobiliTRAIN) we are able to have six awards at 150€ each. Three of those prizes will be based on a comitee and the other three will be based on popular vote by the community. These prizes are only awarded to people that ticked the young scientist checkbox during registration. More Networking!
We have two more events to help you network around the IMSC conference. The first one is our networking challenge, that is doted with 300€. While we will also introduce it during the lunchbreak on monday, here are the essential steps to participate:
- 1st: find a member of each young scientist organization, Club Jeune de SFSM, youngNVMS and DGMS Young Scientists.
- 2nd: take a selfie with those members during the conference.
- 3rd: post the selfie to LinkedIn before Thursday 27th 1 pm with the hashtag #YIMSNetworkingChallenge.
The second event are junior/senior duo chairs, where you have the opportunity to chair a session together with a senior scientist. This way, you get into contact with some big names and can be the first to ask questions after each of your chaired talks, while having a safety net to bail you out if you cannot think of any questions.
