The Young Scientist IMSC Recap
IMSC 2026 what a conference, right? I think for most of us, this was THE biggest conference of their current career, with the exception of ASMS most likely. We hope you all had as much fun as we did, seeing about a year of preparations come to fruition and also all the happy faces of the young scientists attending our various events. We want to thank all of our co-organizers again: Nathan (CJSM), Lilou (Compagnon Group), Pieter, Christel and Elena (yNVMS), without all of you, this would not have been possible. We also want to thank our sponsors again, because we were able to give away 7 prizes to the community, which we were really proud of, so thank you Peak Scientific, Thermo Fisher, MS SPIDoc’s and MobiliTraIN. Another record was the amount of money the DGMS spent in Travel grants, as a whole 34 people came to sign for their participation at 800€ each, so thank you DGMS for the generous sponsoring. And of course we want to thank all of you who we ran into for a chat throughout the conference and especially those who immediately registered for the Fall Meeting of course!
So as a quick recap, what did we do, aside from all the awards and getting signatures from everybody? We had an amazing picnic in the rosegarden on Sunday, where the weather was fantastic. This was followed by the Flash talks (seen above), where 35 young scientists gave 90 second presentations on their research, to entice people to come to their posters or oral presentations. And it was truly amazing to see how really everybody stuck to the time schedule and even though we started delayed, we were on time for the big opening ceremony. Speaking of which, it was amazing to see the amount of people in the auditorium from the stage, truly an astonshing moment. On monday, we had a great time in the dedicated young scientist session with some amazing talks and in the evening we had the networking workshop, where we discussed tips and tricks for going to conferences internationally. On Tuesday evening was another highlight, namely over 150 young scientists crashing a bar in Lyon and we even managed to have the head organizer Isabelle and our favourite DGMS president Thorsten to join us for some drinks. It was truly an amazing time and I hope many of you enjoyed it as well, even though it was a bit cramped inside. On Thursday the conference dinner was also a great time even though, we had to resupply the wine after 2 hours. Lastly, I had the great honor on Friday, to stand next to the presidents of the respective french, swiss and german mass spectrometry societies, as the representative for YIMS and the DGMS Young Scientists. What is YIMS and how are the DGMS Young Scientists involved?
Since the International Mass Spectrometry Conference is the largest MS conference and tries to foster collaboration across borders, we came together with the young societies from the Netherlands (youngNVMS) and France (Club Jeune de SFSM) and founded Young International Mass Spectrometerists. Initially, we wanted to pool ressources to finance and organize the different events, but since we are working on a societal framework to invite other countries too, fostering an international and diverse executive board in the long run. In short, all YIMS events are also our DGMS Young Scientist events and we are currently looking to establish ourselves in the community after the amazing feedback at our IMSC events.
